A - PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
-----------------------
Voicemaker is a speech program that makes the computer talk by con-
verting English text into speech through phonetic sound units called
phonemes. The program has a recorder module where a user can record
the phoneme sounds with his or her own voice. The user also learns
about the mechanics of speech sounds by reading the online help for
pronouncing each phoneme.
Voicemaker's phoneme files may also be used in the text-to-speech
voice of Storymaker+, a shareware program by the author. Storymaker+
is an educational program for creating multimedia interactive story-
books and is available from online services, BBS and other shareware
distributors .

E - RUNNING THE PROGRAM
-----------------------
To initialize the Sound Blaster card, Voicemaker+ looks for the Sound
Blaster environment variable BLASTER. This is normally added to the
AUTOEXEC.BAT in the root directory to specify the Sound Blaster hard-
ware configuration. The command for setting the environment string has
the form:
SET BLASTER=Appp Ii Dd Tt
where:
ppp = Base I/O port
i = IRQ number
d = DMA channel
t = Sound Blaster card version number
Example: SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 T1
If no environment is set, the program attempts to auto detect the card
using base I/O port 220h and IRQ 7 as default settings. It is prefer-
able though that the BLASTER environment be used to avoid port problems
that may cause the system to hang up.
Please refer to your sound card manual for more instructions.
To run the program, change directory Voicemaker's home directory.
Enter VM to run the program itself. For example, if Voicemaker is in
directory VM of drive c:
C: Changes drive to C.
CD \VM Changes directory to VM.
VM Runs the program.
